Bradford Youth Dragonboat Championships

Following several years of developing the sport of Dragon boating within the Bradford district, a separate youth dragon boat competition was included to the already hugely successful Bradford Dragon Boat Festival.  This event was co-hosted by the Dragon boat festival committee, Bradford Adventure Development Team, Bradford Future Leaders programme, Appleton Academy and Race the Dragon Ltd.

The competition was run on Friday 5th May 2017 between 9.30am – 2.30pm and racing took place on the river Aire at Robert’s park in Saltaire  and opened by Cllr Kersten England, the Chief Executive of Bradford City Council.

 

Opened to any school, youth or community group who work with young people aged 11-19, twenty five teams took part this year. 

 

Each team entered had to have been in one of the following categories:

Junior – Years 7 – 9

Senior – Years 10 – 13

Disability - Years 11-25

Mixed – 8 Junior and
                 8 senior paddlers

The Senior's Team Final between:   

Appleton Academy in Boat 1,    Hanson Sixth Form in Boat 2,    Oastlers in Boat 3.

Prizes were awarded in each race category

 

  • Teams had to contain up to 16 paddlers maximum and 1 drummer 

  • Teams had to have at least 4 female paddlers 

  • All aspects of safety on the water was arranged by Race the Dragon.

  • Buoyancy aids when on the water and a full safety brief was given to all participants before their first race.

  • No previous experience was necessary although training was available with Doe Park Water Activities Centre.

  • The competition was be run by fully qualified Race the Dragon instructors.

  • Each team had a minimum of 2 races plus a final if they qualify.

There were also other challenges and activities on the day in Robert’s Park including:

  • Climbing Tower

  • Rodeo Bull

  • Volley Ball

  • Lawn Croquet

  • Challenge Stations

  • Problem solving Challenge Stations
